To insure
the proper fit of your mantel use the following guidelines to measure
your mantel.
DETERMINING THE MANTEL
OPENING HEIGHT "Y"
The opening height of the mantle
of "Y" dimension is determined by measuring the height "D" of
the fireplace facing material and subtracting 1/2 inch from the height
to allow the mantel to overlap the facing material.
DETERMINING THE MANTEL
OPENING WIDTH "X"
To determine the opening width of the mantel "X", measure
the width of the facing material "A" and subtract one inch. This allows
the mantle to overlap the facing material 1/2 inch on each side. You
can overlap the facing material up to one inch less than the width of
the mantel leg if needed
DETERMINING THE RETURN DEPTH
"B"
All Fireplaces have a front or
face made out of non-combustible material such as brick, marble, tile
or slate. This facing material (brick, marble, tile or slate) may be
installed flush with the wall of the fireplace or it may protrude in
front of the fireplace wall. The distance the facing material sticks
out in front of the wall is used to calculate the mantel return depth.
The return dimension or "B" you need to specify is
calculated by adding 1/4 inch to the thickness of the facing material
protrusion. Therefore, if you are installing the mantel over 3/4 inch
thick marble you should specify a return depth "B" of 3/4
inch plus 1/4 inch or B = 1 inch.
READY TO ORDER Once you
determine your opening Height "Y", Opening Width
"X", and Return Depth "G" you can determine all
the dimensions of your mantel using the mantel spec sheets.
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS CHECK TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MANTEL SHELF LENGTH AND
MANTEL BODY WIDTH WILL FIT YOUR SITUATION. The shelf length can be a
limiting factor when installing the mantel between two windows or a
window and door. Make sure you have the space needed for the size
mantel you are ordering.
