Finishing Guides

Finish Wood Mantel or Shelf
How to Paint a Mantel (for any of our mantels and shelves):

1.Choose a high quality semi gloss (recommended) paint color of your choice. Any paint that is used in painting inside house trim is suitable.

2.Have a few different brush sizes available, particularly if your mantel or shelf has dentil molding.

3.Once you have followed the instructions on how to install your mantel or shelf, you can begin painting.

4.Although priming your mantel or shelf is recommend, you do not have to. You can simply apply two to three coats of paint.

How to Stain a Mantel (for our Stainable Birch and Oak mantels and shelves):
1.Choose a stain color of your choice.

2.Once you have followed the instructions on how to install your mantel or shelf, you can begin.

3.Apply the stain according to the manufacturer's directions. It is advisable to test an area to ensure the color is what you want to achieve.

4.If applying more than one coat of stain, be sure to let dry before adding the next coat. If sanding is needed, use a fine (220) grit.

5.Once your stain is dry, apply one or two coats of polyurethane (satin or semi-gloss is recommended) or tung oil to protect your finish.

All stainable mantels and shelves can be finished with clear polyurethane, which brings out the natural color of the wood

PAINTING PROCESS

Before painting make sure the mantel is dry and cured (allow four weeks after installation). After the installation you must paint the mantel with a Kilz Sandable Primer or Krylon Sandable Primer (white finish). You may use a water based latex paint but you need to dilute the paint with water in order to soak into the pores of the mantel. (High humidity may create increased dry time.)

CLEANING PROCESS
Wipe down the mantel with warm soapy water (use non-abrasive soap). If spots will not come clean with water then use a medium to fine painter's sanding block. Make sure the mantel is dry before sanding. Only sand down until you see powder or about 1/3 of an inch.
