Since the mantel is the last piece to be installed during a fireplace installation, measure the width and height of the overall outside of the fireplace and any facing material (marble, slate, brick, etc.) first. This measurement should also accommodate for any mantel overlap that you may want to cover the edge of the facing.

Be sure that there is enough clearance to combustibles, meaning that your local building codes and fireplace model specifications determine how far away combustible materials, such as a wood mantel, must be from the face of the fireplace. Your professional builder and/or installer will know how to determine this and accommodate for it.

Next, depending on what facing material is used, will determine the depth of the inside return of the mantel. By 'return' we mean the depth of the measurement from the back/inside face of the mantel to the wall where it is being installed. We recommend taking three different measurements of the thickness of the facing material and using the largest of the three.

Larger returns are available for thicker facing material applications, for instance brick. The return will simply increase to accommodate the thickness of the facing. The return will always need to be at least ¼" greater than the facing material's thickest point, and this will also ensure accommodations for any walls that are not smooth.

Once you have this information, opening W x H x D, for your mantel, be sure there are no restrictions to accommodate the overall outside measurements of the mantel. Windows placed close to the fireplace, wall outlets/switches, and other obstructions above the fireplace may drastically alter your mantel measurements. It is best to notify us of these restrictions FIRST, before beginning to determine measurements for your mantel.

Congratulations. You now have the full information required and are ready to proceed with purchasing your new mantel.

All the mantels on this web site will meet building codes in most areas of the United States, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their local building code authority to determine if the the mantel opening fits the local building code. If there is no code for mantel openings in relation to firebox openings in your particular area, we strongly suggest the mantel and firebox meet the National Building Code. The following is a reprint from the Standard Building Code.

Alder: Medium density that features a color range of light brown with reddish or peach hues. Natural characteristics include small sound knots, modular rays, curly grains, pin holes, and mineral streaks. This fairly straight-grained hardwood has a uniform texture and is often chosen for its color stability.

Cherry: Ranges in color from white to red to a deep, rich brown. It has a nice grain pattern and a fine texture. It is medium weight, moderately hard, stiff, and strong. Beautiful markings (gum streaks, pin knots) and red color will darken to a rich reddish brown with age, however light to natural finishes are recommended.

Hickory: Is a dense, heavy wood with both closed and open wood grain. The natural color of this wood has a wide range spanning from hues of white to chocolate brown. This wood has characteristic depressions, mineral streaks, and random knots that are naturally occurring and add to the woods appeal. The combination of its hardness, strength, toughness, and stiffness are unmatched by any other hardwood.

Maple: The heartwood is usually light reddish but sometimes considerably darker. The sapwood is commonly white with a slight reddish-brown tinge. Has a fine, uniform texture that is heavy, strong, stiff, hard, and resistant to shock and has high shrinkage. It is very hard and close-grained. Great wood for applications requiring hardness. It has tight grain, pigment type stains don't soak into the wood, except where there is a spot with more open grain, it tends to absorb stain unevenly which leads to a blotchy look.

Oak: Is a strong, open-grained wood that ranges in color from light tan to brown heartwood and creamy white to gray sapwood. It is sometimes streaked with green, yellow, and black mineral deposits that may contain knots and wild grain veins that are natural characteristics in the wood. Takes a finish well.

Quartersawn Oak: Gets its name from how the log was oriented when the lumber was sawn. Unique grain patterns are produced by quartering the log then cutting the quarter using the heart as the edge rather than the center. The distinguishing characteristics of Quarter Sawn are the rays or flecks that appear in random patterns across the grain of the wood. These rays can give the appearance of tiger stripes.

Walnut: Heartwood of walnut varies from light to dark brown and sapwood is nearly white. Normally straight grained, uniform texture, and stable in use. It is heavy, hard, strong, stiff, and has good resistance to shock. Has hard surface, and beautiful color and grain. Easiest woods to finish. Well suited for natural finishes. Dark heartwood makes this very distinctive.

Mantel Assembly Instructions
You will need the following tools to assemble your mantel:
Tape Measure, Pencil, 3/16 and 3/32 Drill Bits, Hammer, Nail Set, Screw Gun, Stud Finder, Level

Step 1 - Unpack the Mantel Installation Kit. There are three plastic bags in that kit:
Assembly Hardware
Installation Hardware
Stain Touch up Stick
You will be using the bag labeled Assembly Hardware (bright orange sticker).

Step 2 - Assembling your Fireplace Mantel Surround
Carefully unpack the mantel from the box and inspect the mantel for damage that may have occurred during shipment. If you find damage to any part of the mantel immediately report the damage to your local dealer or call J.C. Huffman Mantels at 1-800-327-4967. You need to locate all four pieces of the mantel; the legs (2), breastplate, and top shelf.

Step 3 - Set the top shelf on the floor upside down. Attach the breastplate to the top shelf using the indicated size of the screw in the predrilled holes on the back of the breastplate (screw size is labeled by the hole that the screw goes in).

Step 4 - Attach the legs to the breastplate and to the top shelf by once again using the indicated size of the screw in the predrilled holes that the screw goes in (screw size is labeled by the hole that the screw goes in).

Step 5 - Your mantel is now assembled. Set mantel aside and install your facing material (tile, granite, marble, slate) according to its own directions.

Mantel Installation Instructions
Step 1 - Unpack mantel and assemble according to the mantel assembly instructions, under Construction tab.

Step 2 - Unpack the mantel installation box. Box includes: Mounting boards (2-2x2’s or 4-Plywood Strips - Installer decides which works best for his application; both are included for your convenience) screws, finish nails, drywall anchors and touch up stain stick.
If using a Travis Industries Fireplace, please read the following: Install fireplace into wall at desired point, make sure that the face of the fireplace is flush with the drywall. When using an upgrade face, verify if you need to bury the fireplace 1" below the surface of your hearth, or if the bottom of the fireplace will sit even with the top of the hearth. For example: When using an 864FPX and an upgrade face with a 6" tall hearth, you need to frame the fireplace at 5" off the finished floor. This will bury the first 1" of the fireplace below the surface of the hearth; therefore allowing the face of the fireplace to rest directly on the hearth eliminating the 1" gap at
the bottom of the face.
If using a hearth supplied by J.C. Huffman Mantels go to step 3, if not go to step 5.

Step 3 - Align hearth under the front of the fireplace centering it. Using a pencil, make little marks around the outside of the hearth. Remove the hearth and measure in from the marks that you put on the wall ¾ inches (as this is the thickness of the side of the hearth) and off of this mark is where you will screw the mounting boards (you will need to cut the strips to the appropriate length, approximately 4" long) that will provide a block that you can nail through the sides of the hearth into, fastening the hearth to the wall permanently. Install your surround kit into the hearth at this time, following its own directions. Slide the hearth back into position, pre drill the nail holes using the 3/32 drill bit (to avoid splitting the wood) at the back of the hearth where you know the nails will hit the mounting boards and nail through the sides into the mounting boards with the finish nails.

This warranty does not apply to defects due to faulty installation, improper handling, and storage, assembling or finishing, by anyone other than the retail dealer from where your mantel was purchased.
