How to measure your current mantel for a replacement:
Use the following with the Dimensions link, located above. Please keep in mind that these are mantel measurements, not the measurements of your fireplace, gas fireplace, or other area. These are just for the mantel itself.

A = Shelf length
B = Opening width of the mantel (provide above)

How to measure your fireplace for a new mantel:
If you do not know what you want your actual mantel measurements to be or where to begin, please take some measurements of your existing fireplace area. Use the Measurements for New Mantel link, located above. You may not need to take all of these measurements. It is very important, however that you consider any windows or light switches that might prohibit the shelf, which is the widest point of the mantel.

A = Width of *facing material on one side of opening
B = Depth of facing material
C = Height of facing material
D = Total width of facing material
E = Height of hearth
F = Depth of hearth
G = Total Width of Hearth (this is often times the same as the total width of facing material)
H = Opening Height of Facing Material (might also be the same as the firebox opening height)
I = Opening Width of Facing Material (might also be the same as the firebox opening width)
J & K = Distance from a structure like a light switch or window to the facing material.
*Facing Material is brick, marble, tile, slate or any other material that surrounds the opening of a firebox or fireplace


All the mantels on this web site will meet building codes in most areas of the United States, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their local building code authority to determine if the the mantel opening fits the local building code. If there is no code for mantel openings in relation to firebox openings in your particular area, we strongly suggest the mantel and firebox meet the National Building Code. The following is a reprint from the Standard Building Code.

2114.3 MASONRY FIREPLACES
2114.36 Fireplace hearth extensions shall be of approved noncombustible materials for all fireplaces. Where the fireplace opening is less than 6 sq.ft. (0.56m²), the hearth extension shall extend at least 16 inches (406mm) in front of the facing material and at least 8 inches (203mm) beyond each side of fireplace opening. Where fireplace opening is 6 sq.ft. (0.56m²) or larger, the hearth extension shall extend at least 20 inches (508mm) in front of the facing materials and at least 12 inches (305mm) beyond each side of the fireplace opening. Where a fireplace is elevated above or overhangs a floor, the hearth extension shall also extend over the area under the fireplace.

2114.3.7 Fireplaces constructed of masonry or reinforced concrete shall have hearth extensions of brick, concrete, stone, tile, or other approved noncombustible material properly supported and with no combustible material against the underside thereof. Wooden form or centers used during the construction of a hearth and hearth extensions shall be removed when construction is completed.
EXCEPTION: A header of combustible material may be used to support the hearth extension provided that it is located more than 12 inches (305mm) from the face of the fireplace.

2114.3.8 All combustible wood beams, joist, and studs shall be maintained a minimum of 2 inches (51mm) from the outside face of the chimney or fireplace masonry. Headers supporting trimmer arches at fireplaces shall be not less than 20 inches (508mm) from the face of the chimney breast. Trimmers shall be not less than 6 inches (152mm) from the inside face of face of the nearest flue lining.

2114.3.9 Woodwork shall not be placed within 4 inches (102mm) of the back of the fireplace, but shall not prevent plastering directly on the masonry or metal lath and metal furring.

2114.3.10 All combustible mantels and similar trim shall be kept at least 6 inches from fireplace opening. Parts of the mantel assembly located along the sides of the fireplace opening, which project more than 1-1/2 inches (38mm) from the face of the fireplace, shall have additional clearance equal to he projection. Parts of the mantel assembly located above and projecting more than 1-1/2 inches (38mm) from the fireplace opening shall not be placed less than 12 inches (305mm) from the top of the fireplace opening.

2806 FIREPLACES FACTORY BUILT
2086.1 Factory- Built Fireplace
2806.1.1 Factory built fireplaces shall be listed and shall be installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing.
2806.1.2 Factory built fireplaces shall be tested in accordance with and meet the requirements of UL 127
2806.1.3 Hearth extensions of approved factory-built fireplace stoves shall be installed in accordance with the listing. Masonry hearth extensions if used with factory-built fireplaces shall be installed as required in 2144.3.8. The hearth extension shall be readily distinguished from the surrounding area.
2806.1.4 Factory built fireplace shall be installed in accordance with 2114.3.12

2806.2 Factory-Built Fireplace Stoves and Solid Fuel Room Heaters

2806.2.1 Factory built fireplace stoves and solid fuel type room heaters shall be listed and shall be installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing. The factory-built fireplace stoves shall be tested in accordance with and meet requirements of UL737. The solid fuel type room heaters shall be tested in accordance with and meet requirements of UL1482.
2862.2.2 Factory-built fireplace stoves shall also be installed in accordance with 2806.12 and 2114.3.12

2806 FIREPLACES FACTORY BUILT
False fireplaces may be used in connection with listed gas or electric heaters, provided such fireplaces are constructed of noncombustible materials.


Wood Species
MDF
Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is made from wood fibers blended with synthetic resins. This material is easy to paint and withstands many years of use. We use finger-jointed wood moldings on our MDF mantels and shelves.

Stain Grade Birch
Our stainable wood mantel is built from birch with solid white pine moldings

Oak
Our oak mantel is built using red oak veneer and solid oak moldings.


Installing your Fireplace Mantel
1. Remove the scribes from the back of the header. (These will be attached to the inside opening of the mantel after it is installed.)
2. Attach legs to header of fireplace mantel with screws provided. Legs should fit perfectly into header where ‘biscuit’ cuts are.
3. Place fireplace mantel against the wall where you want to install. With the mantel held against the wall, draw a line across the top of the mantel, marking the height.
4. Find the location of the studs below the shelf line and mark the location of the studs on the line.
5. Place fireplace mantel back against the wall and with a drill, drill a hole through the shelf at a 45 degree angle through the sheetrock and stud.*
6. Drive a finishing nail into each stud (should hold the mantel firmly to the wall). If not proceed to next step.
7. Repeat the same process as above on each leg using studs at the base of the wall and floor line.

If you do not wish to use nails, liquid nail can be used as well.
Once your fireplace mantel is installed, place three scribes (attached to the back of the header) along inside opening of mantel and secure with liquid nail, finishing nails or wood glue.
*If applying the fireplace mantel to brick, masonry nails or liquid nail can be used.

How to Install Facing before Mantel
Granite and marble are fragile. When installing your hearth, please do not place the granite or marble directly on the floor until you glue it permanently as it might crack. A backer board is strongly recommended as it will add stability to the hearth. Backer boards and adhesive may be purchased from your local home improvement store.
1. Center the backer board in front of fireplace and nail or glue it to the floor. Cut the board the same size as the hearth. Shim as necessary to ensure that it is flat.
2. Center the hearth in front of the fireplace; spread glue on the perimeter and the center. It is not necessary to completely cover with glue as the weight of the stone will help hold it in place. Be sure to position the polished side out.
3. Apply the glue to the back of the legs, and place on the wall; overlap the fireplace by approximately ½” on each side with the polished side toward the fireplace.
4. Apply the glue to the header (polished side should face the floor) and place on the legs. Be sure the legs are even with the header. Shim side if necessary. If necessary, use roofing nails to hold stone in place while it dries. At this point be very careful as you do not want the header and legs to fall. Allow to dry following manufacturer’s adhesive instructions.
5. Install mantel.
