This design was inspired by preferences of designers within the cities of America. The styles are meant to be simple, with an emphasis on straight lines rather than the more traditional moulds, heavy crowns, and over used flutes. This mantel will add style to any room setting, whether it be found in a Chicago loft, New York condo, or a simple country cottage. All the designs are available built to your specified opening dimensions and in a variety of wood types and finishes.

Since the mantel is the last piece to be installed during a fireplace installation, measure the width and height of the overall outside of the fireplace and any facing material (marble, slate, brick, etc.) first. This measurement should also accommodate for any mantel overlap that you may want to cover the edge of the facing.

Be sure that there is enough clearance to combustibles, meaning that your local building codes and fireplace model specifications determine how far away combustible materials, such as a wood mantel, must be from the face of the fireplace. Your professional builder and/or installer will know how to determine this and accommodate for it.

Next, depending on what facing material is used, will determine the depth of the inside return of the mantel. By 'return' we mean the depth of the measurement from the back/inside face of the mantel to the wall where it is being installed. We recommend taking three different measurements of the thickness of the facing material and using the largest of the three.

Larger returns are available for thicker facing material applications, for instance brick. The return will simply increase to accommodate the thickness of the facing. The return will always need to be at least ¼" greater than the facing material's thickest point, and this will also ensure accommodations for any walls that are not smooth.

Once you have this information, opening W x H x D, for your mantel, be sure there are no restrictions to accommodate the overall outside measurements of the mantel. Windows placed close to the fireplace, wall outlets/switches, and other obstructions above the fireplace may drastically alter your mantel measurements. It is best to notify us of these restrictions FIRST, before beginning to determine measurements for your mantel.

All the mantels on this web site will meet building codes in most areas of the United States, it is the customer's responsibility to contact their local building code authority to determine if the the mantel opening fits the local building code. If there is no code for mantel openings in relation to firebox openings in your particular area, we strongly suggest the mantel and firebox meet the National Building Code. The following is a reprint from the Standard Building Code.

2114.3 MASONRY FIREPLACES
2114.36 Fireplace hearth extensions shall be of approved noncombustible materials for all fireplaces. Where the fireplace opening is less than 6 sq.ft. (0.56m²), the hearth extension shall extend at least 16 inches (406mm) in front of the facing material and at least 8 inches (203mm) beyond each side of fireplace opening. Where fireplace opening is 6 sq.ft. (0.56m²) or larger, the hearth extension shall extend at least 20 inches (508mm) in front of the facing materials and at least 12 inches (305mm) beyond each side of the fireplace opening. Where a fireplace is elevated above or overhangs a floor, the hearth extension shall also extend over the area under the fireplace.

2114.3.7 Fireplaces constructed of masonry or reinforced concrete shall have hearth extensions of brick, concrete, stone, tile, or other approved noncombustible material properly supported and with no combustible material against the underside thereof. Wooden form or centers used during the construction of a hearth and hearth extensions shall be removed when construction is completed.
EXCEPTION: A header of combustible material may be used to support the hearth extension provided that it is located more than 12 inches (305mm) from the face of the fireplace.

2114.3.8 All combustible wood beams, joist, and studs shall be maintained a minimum of 2 inches (51mm) from the outside face of the chimney or fireplace masonry. Headers supporting trimmer arches at fireplaces shall be not less than 20 inches (508mm) from the face of the chimney breast. Trimmers shall be not less than 6 inches (152mm) from the inside face of face of the nearest flue lining.

2114.3.9 Woodwork shall not be placed within 4 inches (102mm) of the back of the fireplace, but shall not prevent plastering directly on the masonry or metal lath and metal furring.

2114.3.10 All combustible mantels and similar trim shall be kept at least 6 inches from fireplace opening. Parts of the mantel assembly located along the sides of the fireplace opening, which project more than 1-1/2 inches (38mm) from the face of the fireplace, shall have additional clearance equal to he projection. Parts of the mantel assembly located above and projecting more than 1-1/2 inches (38mm) from the fireplace opening shall not be placed less than 12 inches (305mm) from the top of the fireplace opening.

2806 FIREPLACES FACTORY BUILT
2086.1 Factory- Built Fireplace
2806.1.1 Factory built fireplaces shall be listed and shall be installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing.
2806.1.2 Factory built fireplaces shall be tested in accordance with and meet the requirements of UL 127
2806.1.3 Hearth extensions of approved factory-built fireplace stoves shall be installed in accordance with the listing. Masonry hearth extensions if used with factory-built fireplaces shall be installed as required in 2144.3.8. The hearth extension shall be readily distinguished from the surrounding area.
2806.1.4 Factory built fireplace shall be installed in accordance with 2114.3.12

2806.2 Factory-Built Fireplace Stoves and Solid Fuel Room Heaters

2806.2.1 Factory built fireplace stoves and solid fuel type room heaters shall be listed and shall be installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing. The factory-built fireplace stoves shall be tested in accordance with and meet requirements of UL737. The solid fuel type room heaters shall be tested in accordance with and meet requirements of UL1482.
2862.2.2 Factory-built fireplace stoves shall also be installed in accordance with 2806.12 and 2114.3.12

2806 FIREPLACES FACTORY BUILT
False fireplaces may be used in connection with listed gas or electric heaters, provided such fireplaces are constructed of noncombustible materials.


Q. Is my mantel constructed out of solid wood?
A. No. Due to the extreme variations in temperature, this fireplace mantel is constructed from solid wood are very unstable and are prone to "open up" at the miter joints.

Q. What will my mantel be constructed out of?
A. The mantels are professionally crafted using a make up of solid wood and MDF. All moldings on the mantel will be solid wood, in what ever species the mantel was ordered in. The wide flat surfaces, which are the portions of the mantel that are prone to be effected by the temperature conditions, have a MDF core with A grade solid wood cut veneers.

Q. Isn't MDF cheap and inferior?
A. No. MDF, which means Medium Density Fiber core material is the most consistently flat sub straight material available. Many people confuse MDF with particle board. The two are completely different. MDF is used because it will maintain a flat, true, stable surface over the life of fireplace mantel. Plywood's warp with the temperature changes and solid wood surfaces tend to split and crack. The MDF is by far the most stable surface for the construction of a fireplace mantel.

Q. What then covers the MDF surface?
A. The MDF core material is covered by A grade, solid wood cut veneers. This type veneer is cut in the same manner a solid wood board is cut, thus it has a true solid wood grain pattern. Most veneers are not cut in this manner, thus making the surface look fake. This is not the case with veneers used here. The component looks like a true solid wood board and stains out as a solid wood board would. Thus your finished out fireplace mantel has the look and feel of a solid wood unit.

Q. Do I need to use any special type finishing products to stain or paint my mantel?
A. All common finishing products are suitable to use in finishing your fireplace mantel.

Q. Is the factory applied finish any different than the finish I would apply at home?
A. Yes. The finish applied at the factory is specially made for the heat conditions of your fireplace. The stains used are specially formulated to remove the common combustible oils that are used in everyday, over the counter staining products. Our finishes also involves a final, special top coat that is applied. This special top coat finish has built in catalyst that keep the finish from breaking down and turning yellow from the heat of the fireplace.


Q. How many individual components make up my full mantel surround when shipped?
A. Your mantel will have two legs and the upper header or breast assembly, for a total of 3 sections all together. There is a s piece scribe mold that, after assembly, is fitted around the interior opening of your mantel.

Q. What is required in the assembly of my full mantel surround?
A. The mantel legs simply "cam lock" into the upper breast assembly using metal interlocking cam screws. A finish nail to further secure the leg and breast assembly together is also recommended.

Q. Is there anything I should watch for or do while assembling my mantel surround that will assist me in the process?
A. You should be sure to place the breast assembly top shelf down to make it easier to attach the legs. Be sure to put down a protective surface if the top shelf is to rest on a surface that might scratch or cause damage. Also, after attaching legs, while preparing to stand the mantel back in its upright position, two persons should be used. One on each side to support the leg and breast assembly as it is being turned back over upright. The weight of the legs must be supported to keep them from breaking loose from the breast assembly.

Q. Is the installation process difficult?
A. No. Two persons can typically install a full mantel surround in just a couple of hours.

Q. Do I need to hire a professional to do my installation?
A. If you have basic skills and basic tools, you should be quite capable of your own installation.

Q. What tools do I need and what is the process?
A. You will need a measuring tape; screw driver (Phillips head or straight); 6 or 8 penny finish nails; 1 ¾ or 2" long all purpose screws or drywall screws; level; power drill or screwdriver recommended; MOUNTING BOARDS. 1x4's for mounting boards, or something similar just as long as not over 1" thick. You will need one board approximately 48" long to go beneath top shelf plate of your mantel, and two 1" thick either 1x4 or 1x6 cut to approximately 6 inches long to go in behind each leg, resting at the bottom of the leg on the floor.

Q. Can you give me an idea as to what the installation process is?
A. Attach the legs to the breast assembly. Place the mantel in the proper location around fireplace; measure firebox opening to be sure mantel is centered; using the top shelf plate as a guide, draw a line on the wall where top shelf plate meets wall and draw a line at the bottom outside edge of each leg, starting at the floor and coming up 6 to 8 inches. Remove mantel assembly from wall. Measure down from the top shelf plate line ¾ of an inch and mark a 2nd straight, level line; measure INWARD ¾" from the bottom leg lines and make a 2nd line for each leg. The 48" long mounting board will be secured to the wall using the interior 2nd line at the top shelf (the line should be visible when mounting board is applied, not covered). Locate wall studs and secure by screwing into wall studs using 2" long screws. Secure smaller mounting "blocks" to the interior lines made at the bottom of the mantel surround legs. Secure these blocks by screwing into the floor seal which is typically found within 1" of the floor. Pre drill two pilot holes, using 1/16 bit, into to top shelf of mantle, about ½ inch in from back side of top shelf and approximately 24" apart. Pre drill one pilot hole into the bottom outside edge of leg approximately 4" up from bottom; place mantel assembly back into place on wall. Secure by nailing 6 or 8 penny finish nails through pilot holes.
